Dr Robert Childs Musical Director

Picture
Dr. Robert Childs returns to NABBSS to direct our 2018, 5th anniversary course. He is a leading figure in the world of brass music, and for over thirty years has performed at the highest level, giving solo performances in many of the world's most prestigious venues.

He has given masterclasses throughout Europe's finest conservatoires and is now recognised as a leading education specialist within his field. During 2000 Robert relinquished his enviable position as principal euphonium and bandmaster with Black Dyke Band in order to become Principal Conductor and Music Director of Cory Band, the Principality's premier brass band. Robert's success with Cory was unprecedented and, having returned to his homeland of Wales, he became Director of Brass Band Studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music, Musical Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and Managing Director of Performing Arts Education.

In 2002 Robert was awarded a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Salford and is also an Associate of The Royal College of Music and Fellow of The London College of Music. Robert gained a Masters Degree with distinction from University of Leeds, holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the Open University and in 2007 his remarkable achievements were recognized by the Worshipful Company of Musicians when he was awarded the prestigious Iles Medal.

During Robert's tenure with Cory, the band won the World Brass Band Championships, National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, Brass in Concert Championship, British Open Championships (five times), European Brass Band Championships (twice), Welsh Regional Championships (nine times)
and led the Band to the No.1 position in the official World Rankings.

In 2008 Robert was given ‘Freedom of the City of London' and also received the prestigious John Edwards Memorial Award by the Welsh Music Guild for outstanding contribution to Welsh Music.

In August 2012, Robert rejoined the Black Dyke Band, as Principal Guest Conductor, and was then appointed as Associate Director of Music in January 2013. In October 2013 Dr Childs relinquished his position at Black Dyke, taking up a guest conducting position with the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band for the 2013 National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall. Robert was then officially appointed Principal Conductor and Director of Music at Grimethorpe in January 2014, a position he held for a very enjoyable three years before relinquishing the post to relocate once again back to his native South Wales in September 2016.

During his tenure at Grimethorpe, Dr. Childs led the band to a record breaking 16th victory at the international Brass In Concert Championships at The Sage, Gateshead in November 2014, on a nationwide tour of Australia in August 2015, and in September 2015 to their fifth (and his sixth) British Open Championships title at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

Dr Childs is now Musical Director of current West of England Champions Woodfalls Band and looks forward to numerous additional successes and continuing his work as a conductor, adjudicator and educator throughout the world of brass.

David Childs Senior Tutor

Picture
King Edward III once said: "If you want to train a longbowman, start with his grandfather." This adage holds just as true for British euphonium soloist David Childs, born in 1981, to a family whose name had been synonymous with brass for the last two generations. His grandfather John was a well-respected euphonium player from the Welsh Valleys who inspired his sons, Robert & Nicholas to take up euphonium. Robert began teaching his son David from an early age and in recent years David has emerged as one of the finest brass soloists of his generation.

In the year 2000 he broke new ground for the euphonium becoming the first euphonium soloist to win the brass final of the televised 'BBC Young Musician of the Year’ which led to David’s highly acclaimed première performance of Philip Wilby’s Concerto for Euphonium with the BBC Philharmonic under Yan Pascal Totelier. In the same year David was awarded the coveted ‘Euphonium Player of the Year’ title, a title he won again in 2004 and still holds today. Since that time David has been instrumental in raising the euphonium’s profile in the classical world of music and has not ceased to wow audiences with his astonishing technique, extrovert musicality and engaging stage presence.

Still in the early stages of his career, David has already toured extensively performing as a soloist in Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Japan, Hong Kong, Europe and the U.S.A. He is a keen advocate of new music and has premièred ten concerti for euphonium including a Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms broadcast of Alun Hoddinott's, 'Sunne Rising - The King Will Ride’, a Carnegie Hall US première of Karl Jenkins’ Concerto for Euphonium & Orchestra, and a UK première of Christian Lindberg’s Concerto for Euphonium & Orchestra directed by the composer. He has also been featured in the Classic fm, Gramophone, Classical Music, and MUSO magazines.

David has appeared as soloist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, Sinfonia Cymru, DCINY Symphony and BBC Philharmonic; made solo appearances at the Singapore International Festival, Welsh Proms, Harrogate International Festival, Cheltenham Festival, Melbourne International Festival, BBC Proms and New York Festival; performed solo recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Bridgewater Hall; given Concerto performances at the Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Symphony Hall, New York’s Lincoln Center and London’s Royal Albert Hall; and regularly records as a solo artist for radio, television and commercial disc.

Having already achieved a great deal as a euphonium soloist David has received many awards in recognition: a Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians; a Star Award from the Countess of Munster; the Musicians Benevolent’ Sir Charles Leggett Award; the Welsh Music Guild’s Leo Abse & Cohen Award; the BBC Radio Wales Soloist Award and the Harry Mortimer Award for Outstanding Achievement amongst others. Having studied at both the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music David is now an Associate of the Royal College of Music London; a Professor at both the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and the Birmingham Conservatoire; an Artist for the Buffet Group Besson, Alliance and Reunion Blues; and a Director of Prima Vista Musikk publishing.

A proud product of the British brass band movement David has performed with many of the world’s premiere brass bands including Brighouse & Rastrick, Black Dyke and Cory with whom he was principal euphonium for 10 years. He is a founder member of the highly successful brass quartet Eminence Brass and Artistic Director of Wales’ premiere wind orchestra Cardiff Symphonic Winds.

David is undoubtedly leading the way for euphonium players worldwide. Through his own performances he continues to showcase the euphonium as a serious solo vehicle within the world of classical music. His latest album, The Symphonic Euphonium with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Bramwell Tovey, featuring four concerti by Hoddinott, Horovitz, Jenkins and Wilby has recently been released, to great acclaim, on the prestigious Chandos label.

A particular highlight for Tom during his time with Cory was receiving the Player of the Year award, voted for by the other members of Cory in 2012.

After touring Australia again in 2013 with the Cory Band, Tom was invited by the Buffet Group and Besson to undertake a series of workshops, master classes and concerts across New Zealand, and continues to represent the instrument manufacturer globally.

It was in that city that Gourlay became involved with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, sharing the tuba chair with John Fletcher. At that time, he was also active in the film industry, performing on the sound tracks of Superman II and III, Batman and Yentl, to name but a few.

After 10 great years at the BBC, working with some of the world's greatest conductors, Gourlay was invited to become the solo tubist of the Zurich Opera House Orchestra in Switzerland. It was there that he developed his skills as a conductor, attending master-classes with Ralph Weikert, and working with the Brass Band Berner Oberland, with which he won the Swiss National Championship 5 times and the Swiss Open Contest 4 times, a record that has yet to be beaten.

After nine years at the Zurich Opera, Gourlay was invited by the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, to become the Head of its Wind, Brass and Percussion department, following in the footsteps of Timothy Reynish. Today, James Gourlay is the General Director of Pittsburgh's River City Brass, the world's only full-time professional brass band, performing 70 concerts annually all over the USA, and Director of Instrumental Music and University Bands at Wheeling Jesuit University, West Virginia.

Gourlay holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Salford, a MMus from the University of Leeds and is a Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music (FRNCM) and the London College of Music (FLCM). Gourlay's repertoire is extensive, ranging from the avant-garde to rock and pop music. He has commissioned more than 50 solo works for tuba and piano, tape, band and orchestra. As a conductor, he works with some of the world's leading brass groups, but also with orchestras such as the Sinfonica in Campinas, Brazil, the Orquestra Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal. He is also a regular guest conductor of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain (NYWO), with whom he toured Switzerland in the summer of 2013.
